Microsoft Enterprise Content Management: Building towards Interoperability of ECM Systems
A major drive of Microsoft enterprise content management SharePoint is to achieve interoperability among different ECM systems.  Microsoft developers call this ECM interoperability as CMIS or content management interoperability systems.

The standardization of ECM will enable companies to work across different platforms and ECM architectures using web services defining the interface and interaction of the software.

Problems on interoperability arise when enterprise data has been migrated from a different sub-unit of an organization.  This can significantly affect corporate productivity as data and knowledge base could not be utilized by concerned departments.

There are lots of challenges when different ECM systems are deployed on the company’s IT architecture.  Although most ECM systems have similar structure, they have dissimilar and sometimes conflicting interfaces.  The choice then for companies is to deploy a uniform ECM system or to have different deployments that could communicate with each other.

That is why the Microsoft Enterprise Content Management system, specifically its SharePoint server, is developing an interoperability architecture that will allow its software to effectively interface with other systems such as IBM’s FileNet P8.

The Microsoft ECM interoperability specifications include the creation of a global domain structure that can be recognized by other systems in order to create a common interface.  The file structures of different ECM systems will be able to communicate thus distribution, usage and sharing can be possible.

With a workable content management interoperability system, the database and technology deployment costs of companies can be reduced.  And because the flow of intra-enterprise information would be easier, productivity and business intelligence will be enhanced.
