Advantages and Disadvantages of the Two Podcast Video Distribution Methods

Podcast is known only to provide great audio files through RSS or Atom feeds. However, podcast may now come with videos. This kind of podcast is known as podcast video, vodcast, or vidcast. Just like podcast, the difference of podcast video is that it can be delivered through RSS or Atom feeds. Thus, video podcast offers easier way of providing contents for subscribers. Podcast videos can be distributed using two methods, as a stream or as a file. Both of these methods have their own advantages as well as disadvantages.

As a file, the video podcast can be downloaded completely before the subscriber can watch it. This way, he can play the vodcast even when not connected to the Internet. He can also watch the vodcast using a portable media player. Podcast video as a file also permits the subscriber to watch the video many times with only one downloading time. This helps in reducing the cost of bandwidth. The disadvantage of this, however, is that the subscriber has to wait for the complete downloading of file before it can be viewed, unlike a podcast video as a stream.

As a stream, the podcast video can already be viewed even without completely downloading the file. He may also seek some scenes and skip other scenes if he wants to. This also helps in lower cost of bandwidth and better statistics. The only common problem with a podcast video as a stream is that the subscriber might face pauses while playing the file. This usually happens if the transfer speed is too slow for the file.

Anyway, the distribution method to be used is only a secondary factor for the beauty of podcast video. What’s important is the content of the podcast video and not how it can be distributed.
