Of course an AI could be smarter than humans.
No one would argue that it would be impossible for a human to build a machine that would travel faster than humans, would they? Intelligence is more complicated than traveling but the same principles apply: figure out how things are done and either come up with an enhanced implementation of the existing mechanism or figure out a new way of achieving the same result.
For traveling faster than humans we figured out wheels with engines, or airplanes or rocket ships.
For intelligence, we can either figure out how to make artificial neurons and wire them up like a human brain or we can figure out how to do it in ways that human brains dont use – such as machine learning algorithms.
I’m not saying it is easy, but it is certainly possible and I am sure it will be done eventually. By the way, if we build the equivalent of artificial neurons out of electronics then the artificial intelligence will have tha advantage of much higher processing speeds and will thus seem even more intelligent than an equivalent architecture made out of biological neurons.
The only way anyone could claim it was impossible would be if they believed intelligence uses some non-physical mechanism (a soul?) to achieve its results.
I don’t believe that is the case…
