Capabilities and Future of WiMAX PHY Layer

WiMAX, just like other telecommunications technology, is a very broad and sometimes referred to as a complex technology. In fact, WiMAX is not that made as it is. There are important concepts and parts that build up a whole WiMAX idea. One of these is the WiMAX PHY. This is not a department in a WiMAX product but it means WiMAX Physical.

WiMAX has a physical layer and that is commonly referred to as the WiMAX PHY. This section is based on the orthogonal frequency portion that can multiplex. There is the concept called as OFDM in WiMAX PHY, which is the transmission method usually chosen by those who want to enable high-speed multimedia, video, and data communications. This WiMAX portion is often used in many broadband systems in the market like the Wi-Fi, DSL, MediaFLO, and DVB-H or Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld. OFDM is said to be a very efficient and elegant system for high rate of data transmission if the environment is multi-path radio or what is called as non-line-of-sight.

The WiMAX PHY is very flexible making it able to send data at a high-speed. But experts say that the speed is still dependent on the operating parameters. There are parameters having a very important impact on the WiMAX’s physical layer of data rate. These are used to channel the bandwidth as well as assist for the coding and modulation. Aside from the OFDM, there are also other parameters that have impacts on the WiMAX PHY like the over-sampling rate.

Due to the importance of WiMAX PHY in the telecommunications technology, many professionals are focusing their study on this layer. In fact, there are books published specially made to discuss the different benefits of the WiMAX PHY and how these can be used more efficiently for communications.
