ERP Support: Ensuring Business-as-Usual Mode during ERP Implementation

ERP deployment does not only include strategic ERP planning, implementation and evaluation.  The process of ERP deployment must also include provision of support and building internal competency centers that will handle technical support and services for the ERP applications solution. The period between going live with the ERP system and determining its strategic impact is a transition stage where the support capabilities of companies will be tested.  This stage is critical to the overall success of ERP implementation.

Companies have two options open for them in order to stay in business-as-usual mode and hurdle the challenges of this transition period.  First, companies can develop their own in-house capability from scratch by training personnel that will handle the ERP support system.  This may include added coordination with the ERP vendor for the necessary retooling of personnel skills.  Companies can also provide advance technical education for their IT staff by enrolling them in ERP institutions and training centers.  Through this method, the internal capabilities of companies for ERP support could be developed over time.

Hiring a third party ERP support center is another option open for companies.  There are lots of consulting and technical management institutions that can provide third party ERP support for enterprises.  These institutions can ensure that the new applications reengineering process through ERP will be glitch free.  At the same time, these institutions can develop the in-house technical support capabilities of companies.  In this way, they can benefit from third party ERP support services in two ways at a price of one.
