Framework for Configuration Management  The Four Components of Configuration Management

Due to the huge demand for advanced technology, many hardware devices and software programs keep on evolving. To keep up with the changing world, a discipline has been developed to keep these changes under control without sacrificing quality. The answer is configuration management. The conventional configuration management framework comprises of the following components:

1) Configuration Identification Configuration identification is a method that involves the process of identifying the various components of the network, specifying each individual component, and then making them available once triggered. The major activities under this phase are the following:

(a) Selection of network components (b) Unique identification of each component.

2) Configuration Change Control Configuration change control involves managing and at the same time, controlling the changes made to the network. The goal of this phase is to set up mechanisms that will ensure the network integrity. The major activities under this phase are enumerated below:

(a) Definition/Documentation of the change control process (b) Identification/Maintenance of the foundations of network configuration (c) Identification/Control the changes made on the network

3) Configuration Status Accounting Configuration status accounting involves change process recording and reporting. The goal of this phase is to sustain a status record or progress report of the items in the network, and therefore providing change traceability. The major activities for this method are the following:

(a) Identification of the configuration status information for reporting (b) Maintain configuration changes (c) Report progress tracking

4) Configuration Reviews Configuration reviews involves the verification of the correctness of configuration status accounting information. The goal of this phase is to review all network components, making sure that they are correctly identified. The major activities include:

(a) Identification of configuration review
 (b) Documentation and analysis of the results
