Geographical Information Systems – Visualizing Data through Maps and Charts

Do you want to know specific directions on how to go to a place that you have never been before? If yes then try using Google Earth, an interactive web mapping tool used by most people in getting geographic information of a certain location. Such useful tool is known as geographical information system software or simply GIS. It refers to any system used to capture, store, analyze, manage and display geographically referenced information in the form of maps, charts and reports. Such technology is not only used to navigate places but it is also important in performing scientific investigations and in other areas such as resource management, asset management, criminology, cartography, marketing, sales and logistics.

Most of the time, GIS is associated with maps. In reality, this is just one type of product generated by a GIS, specifically when a user is working his or her way in understanding geographic data. GIS can be viewed in three ways:

(a) Map View. As mentioned, this is the commonly used format in using GIS. Geographic information is easily understood by using map view as it shows features and feature relationships on the surface of the earth. 

(b) Database View. This is most often referred to as a geographic database (geodatabase). A GIS works as a unique kind of structured database, used to describe the world in geographic terms.

(c) Model View. A GIS can also be used as an information transformation tool for the purpose of deriving new geographic datasets from existing ones.

Basing it from the geographic information presented in GIS, there is no doubt that it would take much time before it is completed. But then again, it is all worth it as the GIS is one great technological innovation used by most people today.
