Part of the work responsibilities of the configuration management team is to interact with the change management, problem management, network management, release management, computer operations, logistics, design, finance, and the administrative people. Taking this into consideration, logistics or configuration management should be considered as one entity and should not be separated. Logistics plays a very important role in the projects life cycle.
Logisticians enter into the service support of the configuration management team in order to make sure that monitoring and control is done properly so that costs are not exorbitant when problems are incidents are reported. Maintenance and support should also be a part of logistics or configuration management because the projects reliability and risk probabilities should be determined so that proper action plans can be facilitated.
The configuration management team will also be in close coordination with the logistics in terms of the level of inventory and stocks control. The involvement of logistics in configuration management will be dependent on his understanding and application of the impacts of support on the sustainment of the project. Planning on the who will be accountable for the rights, support concept, costs and risk are a part of the logistics or configuration management control of the system.
There will be times when a third-party contractor will not be able to deliver the required logistics performance. Therefore, the protection of the organizations interest will also be one of the major responsibilities of the logistics or configuration management team. The logistician should still have enough technical knowledge and data available in order to successfully sustain the project with minimal cost to the organization.
