One of the objectives of network management is to find cost effective ways to render services to consumers, and at the same time, maximize the use of resources. By doing so, power conservation will also be achieved as more and more companies are integrating energy saving devices and software applications to computers and other equipment used in networking systems.
There are certain networking systems that are 24 hours in operation, which means that energy consumption may be on its maximum peak. But then again, it is a must to perform server maintenance regularly to ensure optimum performance. Certain units should be shut down especially when operators went out of the office and left computers idle for hours. Merely putting the unit of sleep mode or just shut the computer down may mean conservation of energy, not to mention saving money for operational purposes.
There are also software applications introduced for the purpose of decreasing energy consumption, the most popular of which is the free tool from the US Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency called Energy Star. A lot of companies such as General Electric (GE) have adapted the Energy Star program’s EZ GPO software and drove satisfactory results in terms of reducing electricity usage.
With the release of Vista, Microsoft has also incorporated power management features to its new operating system that makes it more appealing to IT professionals. The same thing happened to companies such as BigFix and Persystent Technologies, which only goes to show that the awareness for network power management is a must nowadays. This does not only benefit the business but the environment as well.
