The Difference between SCJP 1.5 Study Notes and SCJP 1.4 Study Notes

You need to understand that the SCJP 1.4 exam is different in some ways from the more advanced Sun Certification exam called SCJP 1.5 This should guide you in creating appropriate SCJP 1.5 study notes as you study for the SCJP 1.5 exam.

First, the SCJP 1.4 exam had only 61 questions which the examinee needed to answer within 120 minutes only. The SCJP 1.5 exam, on the other hand, has a total of 72 questions for you to answer within a timeframe of 175 minutes.

It was possible to pass the SCJP 1.4 exam if you answered at least 52% of the questions right. However, the SCJP 1.5 exam sets a minimum passing score of just 59%, which is not much of a concession since most people agree that the SCJP 1.5 exam is much harder than the SCJP 1.4 exam.

The SCJP 1.4 exam used to have questions regarding Bit Manipulation but that has been removed from the SCJP 1.5 exam. In the SCJP 1.5 version, you need to be knowledgeable in certain language features such as autoboxing and unboxing; static imports; generics; and enums. You need to study about API features such as java.util.regex.Matcher; java.util.regex.Pattern; java.util.Scanner; java.util.Formater; java.util.Locale; and java.lang.StringBuilder. In addition, it is important to go over Java IO features like PrintWriter; FileWriter; FileReader; BufferedWriter; BufferedReader; and File.

Questions regarding encapsulation (based on JavaBean conventions) are deemed more important now in the SCJP 1.5 exam version (compared to past exams.)

Both the SCJP 1.4 and the SCJP 1.5 exams require full-length answers, meaning zero credit is awarded for partial answers.
