Understanding the Elements of CMMI Configuration Management

One of the very important areas in product development process is the Configuration Management which is just one of the process areas in CMMI. Configuration Management is already on the second level of maturity in the Capability Maturity Model Integration. The purpose of this process is to set and maintain the integrity of the products by ways of identification and configuring the identification, control, status accounting and audits.

Configuration Management is a model that is very technical in nature. It is focused in the establishment and maintenance of consistency of the performance of the company’s products with regards to its physical attributes and design and other requirements. CM or Configuration Management is also very concerned about security features of the organization’s soft and hardware throughout the cycle of the IT.

In the old times there were four elements of the configuration management which were earlier mentioned. These are configuration identification, change control or management, status accounting and finally verification and auditing. The configuration management is widely used by different commercial and industrial sectors like engineering for example. But one of the widest users would be the military sector which aids to manage their complex systems which includes ammunition, transportation and information system to name a few.

In the CMMI Configuration Management process, the above elements are very important in the development process. To sum up CMMI Configuration Management and to understand it better, always remember that it is very much concerned with how the processes work throughout its lifespan or very existence.
