There is no denying that computers have made all aspects of people’s lives so much more convenient. However, there’s also no denying that newer, other problems that urgently need addressing have come up with using computers.
One dilemma that has always been in the minds of software developers since computers have been used for large-scale endeavors is the power to overcome issues with the portability, capability, and capacity of available resources. There were problems with applications that could work in one platform but couldn’t in another one. There were also concerns with servers being used up by single functions, instead of being maximized by making them perform several tasks all at once. There were also questions on improving storage spaces by making them retain more information and data. That was what the problem was—computers could perform their tasks virtually perfectly, but not efficiently. This wasn’t the ideal scenario; after all, quality should go hand-in-hand with quantity.
A solution to this problem is virtualization. This kind of technology allows physical resources to be made virtual. It turns out that virtual resources are much better because they’re already enhanced and modified to perfectly suit the requirements of the users. Instead of spending on buying more resources (e.g. getting more computers each hosting a different operating system), users can make do of their available resources (e.g. virtually partitioning a single computer, with each partition independently hosting a different operating system).
Virtualization can be done on resources such as different forms of storage, servers, and operating systems, among other things.
