Front end coding tends to deal with display systems and user interfacing, and typically is processed on the client side (browser).
Backend engineering tends to deal with data management and processing and usually runs on remote servers.
Simply put front end is client based, back end is server based.
Backends end up producing front end materials, and this backend is near invisible to anyone looking at your website.
I thought you might also like to know that the more recognizable terms are “Server-side” (back end) and “Client-side” (front end), although I have used the other terms myself.
