APQP 1 big thing: Maintain assembly tooling and spare part inventory and make recommendations for stocking levels.
The big picture: Be certain that your staff creates and/or handles engineering change order documentation and follows process to completion, building and managing a comprehensive database.
Why it matters: Manage the effectiveness and timely completion of root cause investigation and resolution of customer, warranty and supplier quality incidents in compliance with industry best practice closed loop methodologies.
What to watch: Ensure your operation is responsible for new product advanced quality planning activities, quality roadmap implementation and improvement, and driving Vehicle Group organization for defect free new product launches by meeting the APQP requirements.
State of play: Safeguard that your process identifies supplier quality concerns (product and process) based on data and other inputs, assesses the associated operational risk and failure costs, and implements appropriate actions to drive improvement.
Between the lines: Make headway so that your personnel is responsible for developing and implementing the systems and processes necessary to support the required quality level in all products to all (internal) customers.
Under the hood: Lead the organization to define program product costs, tooling costs and capital requirements for the program, develop required documents and business case in order to receive Capital Appropriation, and manage capital spending to the budget.
Top APQP Must Haves
APQP Executives tell us every quarter about their must haves.
Here are their most urgent ones:

Top thinkers are using The Art of Service Critical Capabilities Analysis, the guide that’s helping leaders stay ahead of what’s next.
This guide will help you plan your roadmap. The Critical Capabilities and Priorities Guide enables leaders to shortlist hundreds of appropriate results, already prioritized.
Be smart: Secure that your company reviews and evaluates designs and project activities for compliance with systems design and development guidelines and standards; provides tangible feedback to improve product quality and mitigate failure risk.
What we’re hearing: “Interface so that your operation is supporting price negotiations with fact formation and opportunities to drive short and/or long term product cost reduction improvement.“, Program Manager – Engineering (Automotive)
Meanwhile: Supplier Performance Improvement- Bi-annual review supplier performance ratings with plant staff in order to support the identification of the most disruptive suppliers for systemic improvement actions through a focused, supplier review and tracking process.
How it works: Ensure cross functional team member responsibilities are clearly identified and establish project measure of performance based on business case and other predetermined criteria at start of the project.
The bottom line: Make headway so that your staff is responsible for research and development of new product lines and new materials to enhance the product line.
What’s next: Ensure you provide your (internal) customers, leading industry expertise with a full service concept of design capabilities and deliver tailored, cost efficient solutions to them.
ICYMI: Interact closely with cross functional Team to perform Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) for new product launches and Advanced Quality Planning (AQP) for product and/or process changes.
