A database is defined as a systematic arrangement of various data. Databases also help an organization to have a more organized data for faster retrieval and adding of information. Today, digital data can be easily managed through the various software devices called database management systems. One of the most common and most useful database management systems for many organizations is the Microsoft SQL Server. In SQL Server, as well as other database applications, there is a thing called index, which provides for better retrieval of information.

Generally, an index in database is a list of keywords or keys that identifies a certain record. Through the use of indices, finding certain records becomes faster. These also help in sorting different records easily through identifying their specific keys.

SQL Server index also works similar to this. It helps in finding different data in a database quickly. However, creating or even removing these indices will not result in any general changes to the SQL Server’s application code. Indices work without affecting the code because of its so-called “behind the scene” approach. Although that is the case, it is still important to create SQL Server indices if the user wants to tremendously increase and enhance the application’s performance.

Without using SQL Server index, searching for a specific data will be like looking in every portion of the database. Doing this is not a problem if there is only a little amount of record in the database. However, if one is looking for a certain data in thousands of tables and rows, that will certainly be a very time-consuming and expensive choice.

That is why big companies and organizations are familiar with using SQL Server index. With this, more efficient and faster use of SQL Server database is ensured.
