The need to promote customer relationship management (CRM) on every organization has paved the way for the creation of several CRM software applications. Every CRM software promises to provide solutions to on-going problems as far as customer relations is concerned. One of these CRM software vendors is SugarCRM, now considered as one of the industry leaders in the provision of commercial open source software for companies of any size. It easily adapts to any business culture or environment by offering a more cost effective and comprehensive approach in dealing with customer relationship management.

Clint Oram, John Roberts and Jacob Taylor founded SugarCRM in 2004. It started out as an open source project on the site Sourceforge in April of 2004 and since then, have been downloaded and used by a lot of companies that it even reached the 25,000 mark by September of the same year. A month after, Sourceforge even acknowledged it as the Project of the Month. Until now, the Sugar Open Source project remains active on SourceForge and has been downloaded more than 3 million times already.

Talking about statistics, SugarCRMs customer base increased tremendously from a stumpy 50 to a hefty 1,200 in just a span of two years. This population includes such large companies and organizations like Yahoo!, Starbucks, BDO Seidman, Honeywell, NASA Ames Research, First Federal Bank, State of Oregon and AXA Rosenberg.

Currently, there are three versions of the SugarCRM software, namely Sugar Open Source, Sugar Enterprise and Sugar Professional. While Sugar Open Source can be downloaded and used free of charge, both Sugar Enterprise and Sugar Professional, on the other hand, can be sold at affordable premium rates applied as an annual subscription.
