Because many companies now depend on Cisco technologies for their network and networking needs, IT professional certifications specifically designed for Cisco products and services are being administered by the Pearson VUE. Exam
certifications include three levels:  the Associate, Professional, and Expert.  The CCNA exam number 640-801 is the qualifying exam for a certification in the field of Cisco Certified Network Associate or CCNA.

Exam number 640-801 will include questions and materials learned from the Interconnection Cisco Network Devices (ICND) as well as those learned from the new Introduction to Cisco Networking Technologies (INTRO).  CCNA 640-801 is a
certification that evaluates candidates on their knowledge and makes sure that they have the necessary skills to establish, implement, connect, configure, and troubleshoot, the different Cisco networks and networking technologies.

In terms of planning and designing, the CCNA 640-801 exam will cover topics such as the designing of simple LAN layouts using the technology of Cisco, the IP addressing and designing schemes, routing protocols and requirements, customized access list based on user specifications, and many other related topics on the successful delivery of Cisco networking.

The CCNA 640-801 exam will also cover implementation and operation procedures like router configuration, protocols, IP addressing.  Customization of switch configurations in order to meet specific network demands and managing of LAN
implementations will also be included in the exam.

Troubleshooting and technology familiarity will also be part of the 640-801 CCNA exams.  Last November 6, 2007, the CCNA 640-801 was retired and replaced with the 640-802 which includes such technologies as VOIP, wireless LAN, IOS Management via SDM, VPN and many more.

The CCNA (or Cisco Certified Network Associate) INTRO Exam 640-821 discusses and teaches the core concept of OSI Layer 3, as well as the main protocol of Layer 3 as used in TCP/IP.

The CCNA 640-821 discusses the typical features of the OSI Layer 3, the fundamentals of IP Addressing, the Network Layer utilities, the IP routing and its routing protocols.

A network layer (or layer 3) is a protocol that defines addressing and routing. OSI, on the other hand, defines distinctive Layer 3 protocol as a system that describes CLNS (or connectionless Network Services.) Though OSI protocols are rarely seen nowadays, other protocols that perform the same function are available.

The use of IP Addressing is the way used by your device to communicate with other devices. Before you can communicate with other device, you will then need an IP Address. With the appropriate IP address, you can then receive and send IP packets. The device that is used to send and receive IP packets is called the IP Host.

The network layer features a design that allows logical addresses in groups. This network layer will define the numeric value of an address or set of addresses.

Routing protocols sometimes can be tricky when we try to define its terminology. Routing Protocol defines routes and puts them on routing table. Routed Protocol is a sort of forwarded packet through a network. Path selection is also a definition of the word Routing.

A CCNA 640-821 outline will teach you how routing works in the most effective way for a network user. The CCNA 640-821 outline can also help you to decide which topics you already know and what you want to
know more of.
