Why would you study IT/IS at university?

A couple of weeks ago I sent out a newsletter to our international client where I was pondering over something that a client of mine mentioned earlier that week.
I’ve copied part of the newsletter below:

  • Today I had a chat with a university professor and we were discussing the fact that the enrolments in IS (Information Services) based degrees are down approx. 25%  on what they were 4 years ago. This is a big problem for this particular university.  IT/IS just isn’t exciting to young people and doesn’t seem to have the appeal that a Business degree or Arts degree seem to have. Is it because the perception of IT/IS is that it is a boring subject? For geeks only?

  • And if that is true, why is it that you and I are so passionate about a subject that is perceived to be very dry and boring? I mean, my company helps organizations implement processes to enable them to achieve IT Service excellence. Not really something you discuss at a birthday party or neighbourhood barbeque…
