In the early 1990s, Ivanka Menken and Gerard Blokdijk discovered that good consultancy comes down to asking the right questions. In 2000, they moved from the Netherlands to Brisbane, Australia, to build a company around that idea. Our Story

The Art of Service began as an IT Service Management consultancy and training business in Queensland, Australia. Gerard and Ivanka had spent years as management consultants across Europe, North America, and Australasia, and they kept coming back to the same insight: the organisations that improved fastest were the ones that asked themselves the hardest questions.

So they started curating those questions, thousands of them, refined across hundreds of client engagements, and built them into self-assessment toolkits that any team could use without hiring a consultant. What started as a database of essential questions became the foundation for one of the world's largest libraries of compliance and operational excellence resources.

By 2009, the company had gone fully digital. Over the following decade, the catalogue grew to include certification courses, self-assessment guides, and a publishing operation that now spans over 1,500 titles across every major compliance and technology domain. In 2024, they began structuring 25 years of accumulated knowledge into an AI-powered compliance intelligence platform, turning expertise that once cost $300/hour into an accessible tool for $149/month.

Our Founders

Ivanka Menken

Co-Founder & CEO

Ivanka spent her first 30 years in the Netherlands, earning a double degree in Applied Sciences and Education before moving from teaching at a trade college to corporate ICT training. Her career took her across the Netherlands, USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, delivering organisational change management projects for government agencies and private corporations.

In 2000, she and Gerard moved to Brisbane to found The Art of Service. Under her leadership as CEO, the company has served over 100,000 professionals across 160+ countries. She is the author of 186+ published works, including the widely adopted ITIL Foundation Complete Certification Kit and the ISO/IEC 20000 Foundation Certification Kit.

Ivanka holds ITIL Expert and ISO 20000 Expert certifications, and was a founding member of EXIN's expert panel for the ISO/IEC 20000 certification scheme. She completed MIT's Entrepreneurial Masters Program in 2013, is a sought-after speaker at global IT events including the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF), and regularly guest lectures at Queensland universities.

Gerard Blokdijk

Co-Founder & President

Gerard's management consultancy career began in the Netherlands in the early 1990s, where he developed the question-based methodology that would become the foundation of The Art of Service. He holds an MBA in International Business from the International Management Institute and has spent three decades at the intersection of compliance frameworks, governance standards, and technology.

As the architect of The Art of Service's compliance knowledge graph, Gerard led the transformation from a publishing catalogue into a structured intelligence platform with 2.1 million interconnected data points and 3.2 million relationships. His work has been indexed on Google Scholar with 1,200+ academic citations, placing it in the top 1% of most cited work worldwide in the compliance tools space.

Gerard is one of the most prolific authors in the compliance and operational excellence domain, with over 1,500 published works spanning every major framework from NIST Cybersecurity to ISO 27001 to AS9100.
