EU Batteries Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542)

The Batteries Regulation replaces Directive 2006/66/EC with a life-cycle regime for all batteries placed on the EU market: substance restrictions, carbon footprint declarations, classes and thresholds, recycled content documentation and minimum shares, performance and durability requirements, removability and replaceability of portable and LMT batteries from February 2027, safety of stationary storage systems, labelling with the separate collection symbol and a QR code, state of health data in the battery management system, conformity assessment with CE marking, the obligations of manufacturers, importers, distributors, fulfilment providers and second-life operators, supply-chain due diligence for cobalt, natural graphite, lithium and nickel (from 18 August 2027 after Regulation (EU) 2025/1561), producer registration, extended producer responsibility, collection targets, treatment, recycling efficiency and material recovery targets, reporting, and the battery passport for LMT, industrial and electric vehicle batteries from 18 February 2027. It comprises 65 controls organised across 6 domains, and applies in the European Union.
